Who cares about Canarsie's old knisheries, bagel joints, hardware stores, etc. What I remember from the 1970s and even earlier is the 14th St. Canarsie subway line. That was the last line to run the R-9 subway cars, which were manufactured by the American Car & Foundry Co. of Berwick, PA. They ran until the late '70s or even early 80's. The cars had rattan seats, bare incandescent light bulbs hanging upside down from little stems, ceiling fans with steel blades without any protective covering, clerestory roofs and the distinctive sounds of the Westinghouse motors. Alas, AC&F and Westinghouse are gone and so are all of the other US manufacturers of transit cars, replaced by Kawasaki, Kinki, Bombardier, Breda, Alstom, CAF, etc. Oh well.
