Prophesied Hope-Bringer

Hey. Let me tell you a secret. Quiet people piss me off.
~ Susie to Kris at the beginning of the game.
Heheh... Didn't think we'd still be standing, huh? Thing is, you actually messed up, picking a fight with US! You? You're all damn alone. Me? I got Kris and Ralsei behind me... Even... even if you knock them down, as long as I'm here... as long as I'm here to lift them back up... you're never gonna win, you hear me?! You know you can't win, so give up! You won't even... say a thing, huh? Heh... heheheh... Man, I'm done talking. People like you... just piss me off.
~ Susie to the Knight during their boss fight

Susie is the deuteragonist of the 2018 episodic indie RPG Deltarune.

She is a monster who is seen as the local bully until one day, where she and Kris stumble into an alternate dimension called the Dark World. There, they learn from the dark prince Ralsei that they are part of a Prophecy, where they will save the world as Delta Warriors. Initially reluctant about her new role as a hero, Susie slowly becomes a more benevolent and kindly person, developing into a selfless heroine determined to stop evil, regardless of what the prophecy says.

She is Kris, Ralsei and Lancer's best friend, Noelle Holiday's love interest, and one of the Roaring Knight's arch-nemeses.

Appearance[]

Susie has the appearance of a tall, purple, vaguely reptilian monster with freckles at the sides of her face. In Hometown, Susie has messy aubergine hair that hangs over her eyes, a long purple jacket, a white shirt with blue trims, a pair of torn jeans and a pair of black shoes.

In the Dark World, her hair is plum, her skin turns lavender pink, and her clothes are replaced with: a black vest with pink trim, sleeveless purple shirt, baggy plum pants, and black boots with golden trim. She also has studded bracelets on her arms and a belt with a large golden buckle in the shape of a heart.

After defeating King, she pulls her hair out of her eyes, which are revealed to be yellow. Susie's eyes remain uncovered throughout the game, though they are sometimes hidden during fights with powerful foes. Noelle also claims Susie has a tail, something which she vehemently denies.

Personality[]

At first, Susie appears to be a violent and mean-spirited delinquent that doesn't care about authority. This seems to be the case as she displays an indifference to Alphys's authority and threatens Kris with violence for fun, causing all the townsfolk to fear her in one way or another. These brutish traits are amplified when she enters the Dark World in Chapter 1, wherein she heedlessly terrorizes the Darkners and refuses to help save the world simply because she'd rather not. As such, she bonds with Lancer over their shared love of villainy, though their attempts never really go anywhere.

In truth, Susie's delinquency and ill behaviour stem from her estranged relationship with her parents as well as a crippling lack of self-esteem that she, in turn, projects into those she torments. The most notorious example of this is seen in one of Noelle's Blogs in the Spamton Sweeptakes, where she lashes out at Kris and says that one day their mother would get tired of them, and then someone might make them "disappear" and she'd realize how happy she is without them; obviously in reference to herself. Prior to her adventures in the Dark Worlds, Susie fully believed that she couldn't stand out at anything other than being a brute and thus embraced her "role" in society. However, she would eventually grow out of this behavior thanks to the help of her newfound friendship with Ralsei and Kris - though Susie still belittles herself at times when going through her adventures, displaying a lack of trust in her role as a hero. Fortunately, with Gerson's guidance, Susie builds up her confidence and is, by the end of the chapter, a fully fledged heroine with unshakable morals. However she does keep her more inoffensive rebellious traits, such as her rebellious and mischievous streaks, naming herself "ASS" during Tenna's game show and fooling around with Kris during the church service.

Underneath that violent and abusive charade, Susie is actually a caring and loving person that longs to experience true and genuine bonds with her peers. While initially hostile towards Lancer, she decides to bond with him to try and inspire him to become a better villain, and even after his "betrayal" forgives him and understands his reasons for doing so. After her fight against Kris and Ralsei, Susie gradually begins realizing the error of her ways and decides to become a better person, reflected by how she shields the party from King's attack and promises to be nicer to others after the adventure is finished. She also abandons her violent ways, forcing the game's mechanics to allow her to peacefully ACT in the second chapter so she can follow Kris's example with Ralsei.

More than anything, Susie appreciates and deeply loves her newly found friendships after years of isolation, often vocally expressing her love towards Kris and Ralsei and how their friendship has changed her for good throughout the game. She is commonly seen goofing off with Kris and putting herself in harm's way to keep them safe. Susie can extend this compassion to foes, giving a pep talk to both Tenna and Ralsei over their fears of being discarded, using her own experiences and now using them to do good instead of tormenting others via projection.

Susie finds honesty to be the most fundamental pillar in friendship, repeatedly stating that she doesn't like it when people hide important secrets from her. In Chapter 4, Susie even lashes out at Ralsei for knowing more than he lets on about the Prophecy. She is also extremely uncomfortable and disillusioned when she saw Toriel under the influence of alcohol.

While initially unaware at Noelle's romantic advances and mistaking them for suspicion, it is implied that Susie caught on to them (or potentially began reciprocating them on her own) after their trip in the Ferris Wheel, as she behaves far more romantically towards her in later chapters and even takes pride on taking her to the Festival in Chapter 4, going as far as to openly announce it on Carol Holiday's face after her disapproval. Despite this, she still seems rather dumbfounded at how to advance her relationship with Noelle thanks to her odd mannerisms, attempting to offer her a rose stem as food after eating it, though the two are still able to bond over their shared interests.

Susie also displays a rather intelligent side as in Chapter 4, she forms a hypothesis on the bunker's significance and comes up with a plan to investigate it.

Trivia[]

The prophecy panel reading "And last was the girl. At last was the girl" displays a symbol for the Spell action, which is prominently featured all around Susie's room. This implies that Susie wasn't supposed to be part of the original Delta Warriors and was supposed to take up a role similar to Noelle's in Chapter 2.

Gerson describes Susie as "the Dragon", implying that she was never part of the original three heroes of the prophecy that Lord of the Hammer was based off. The first chapter of the story, where the heroes "defeat the king and stop the dragon" also parallels how King is defeated and Susie is redeemed in the first chapter of Deltarune.

This seems to be supported by how Gerson describes himself in the prophecy/Lord of the Hammer as giving the heroes "a terrible weapon". This can be interpreted as the Justice Axe being unequippable for all of the party members (if Noelle is believed to be the destined monster), hence being "terrible" as in useless, or Susie utilising the Axe to bring about great harm with its power to make it "terrible" as in malicious, once again implying that she was supposed to be more villainous.

Alternatively, the "terrible weapon" could refer to two things at once: Gerson inspiring hope of defying the prophecy and the Justice Axe itself.

Finally, Noelle was the first one to volunteer to retrieve the chalk in Chapter 1. Seeing as Susie and Kris were sent to retrieve it instead as a punishment, it's possible that had Susie not turned up that day, Noelle and Kris would be the ones to enter the Dark World instead, Noelle out of volunteering and Kris as punishment for being late.

While it's possible that Susie didn't actually replace Noelle as the hero of the story, her actions in the story still display that the prophecy is far more malleable than previously thought, allowing her to possibly reinvent the ending and avert its tragedy.

As Susie bleeds and is familiar with blood, two things that other monsters seem unfamiliar with, it's been theorised that she is a half-human. However, seeing as Sans, a regular skeleton, also bleeds before turning to dust, it's likely that most monsters bleed and Susie's rough upbringing is why she knows so much about blood.

It's implied that the rightmost apartment in Hometown is Susie's house, seeing as she shows a uniquely adverse reaction to it whenever the door is interacted with. This matches up with the implications of her having a troubled home life.

Additionally, the room Ralsei shows when talking about the true nature of Dark Worlds is also implied to be Susie's room, seeing as it has a kaiju poster similar to her Susiezilla outfit and appears decrepit, once again aligning with implications of her troubled home life and neglectful parents.
