This study is among the many research works of the Butajira Rural Health Program (BRHP). The BRHP is running a demographic surveillance system in selected kebeles of the Meskan and Mareko district, Gurage zone, Southern Peoples' Nations Nationalities Regional Government, Ethiopia. Numerous studies have been conducted on various aspects of health parameters and determinants from this site since 1987. Among the many major research findings in the area of reproductive health was the observation of the high prevalence of domestic violence which is a serious concern for women in the area affecting their social, psychological and physical well-being. Many other studies have also indicated that the welfare of children and the entire family is heavily dependent on the positive contribution of women. Thus, an international level multidisciplinary team was organized to study issues surrounding the life of women in greater detail in order to move forward the agenda for improving women's status nationally and internationally. Extensive consultations were made with federal and local women's affairs offices in adapting instruments used to collect data internationally. Stakeholders were also involved to the extent possible in an attempt to increase the usefulness of the study. The process we followed in conducting the study and disseminating the results was carefully chosen based on experiences in other countries in doing similar studies.

Syllabus: Introduction to Gender Studies (instructor: Ani Kojoyan)

Ani Kojoyan

2014

The present course is a critical evaluation of the ways in which gender as a social category is shaped in certain social contexts through social institutions. It provides and discusses basic ideas around categories and terms 'sex' and 'gender'. It covers and presents sensitive issues on gender and genocide studies. It also touches upon issues of violence in its various forms and representations. It is important to understand gender, and gender studies in a broad sense, is a wide academic field, therefore, it should not always be limited to the studies of certain categories only. It is an open domain that crosses the boundary of philosophy and theology, psychology and biology, literature and linguistics, politics and economics, medicine and environment, etc, thus, addressing issues and often presenting some solutions and directions of analysis to certain problems. Though it is a socially and culturally constructed category the issues raised by gender are timeless and deserve a thorough consideration and investigation. So, the present course is a survey on gender studies which warmly invites students from different disciplines and wide interests to study some basic and key concepts, theories on gender studies both on global and local contexts. The course also challenges students to intellectually grapple with socially designed stereotypes and ideas which are often accepted as proper and accepted, and to consider how they are personally situated within the system.

ARTICLE-EMPOERING WOMEN-CG

Vijay Prakash Sharma

A woman needs to be physically healthy so that she is able to take challenges of equality. But it is sadly lacking in a majority of women especially in the rural areas. They have unequal access to basic health resources and lack adequate counseling. The result is an increasing risk of unwanted and early pregnancies. The greatest challenge is to recognize the obstacles that stand in the way of their right to good health. To be useful to the family, community and the society, women must be provided with health care facilities. Empowerment would become more relevant if women are educated, better informed and can take rational decisions. It is also necessary to sensitize the other sex towards women. It is important to usher in changes in societal attitudes and perceptions with regard to the role of women in different spheres of life. Adjustments have to be made in traditional gender specific performance of tasks (Sharma 2010).
