The University of Alabama System has named three senior staff across different system organizations, with compensation totaling $1 million.

The University of Alabama System board of trustees compensation committee welcomed a new general counsel and two new administrative positions at a compensation meeting on Aug. 15.

John Daniel is general counsel and senior vice chancellor of the University of Alabama System, effective Aug. 1. His current salary is $550,000, a 14% increase.

Daniel has more than two decades of legal experience within the university system, including serving as chief university counsel at the UAB Office of Counsel, according to trustee Davis Malone. He’s been serving as interim general counsel since April.

“John’s judgment and integrity, his unmatched institutional knowledge and unique understanding of our system make him exceptionally well suited to lead UA System’s legal department,” Malone said.

The University of Alabama System employs 95 full-time staff as of 2024, according to UAS data.

Mary Kathryn “Katie” Crenshaw will be vice president of administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, effective Sept. 1. Her salary will be $405,000, a 6% increase.

Crenshaw has been serving as interim vice president of administration since Dec. 1 and has served as chief risk and compliance officer since 2020.

“Katie is a trusted, experienced advisor and a proven and respected leader across UAB,” president Ray Watts said in a news release. “She is deeply committed to supporting the UAB community, the people we serve and every pillar of our mission.”

This is a new position that supports the university and health systems, according to Lynn Cole, vice chancellor for system communications. Crenshaw will oversee police and public safety, human resources, Title IX and government affairs and continue to lead risk and compliance.

Overall, UAB employs 12,006 part-time and full-time staff, faculty and graduate assistants, not including hospital employees.

Kristalyn M. Lee will be chief administrative officer at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, effective Aug. 27. Her salary is $232,000. Lee served as senior vice president for administration at the University of Montevallo.

This new position reports directly to the president and and “provide leadership for critical business operations, including human resources, facilities and operations, public safety, information technology, and risk and compliance, Cole said.

UAH employs 2,013 part-time and full-time staff, students and faculty.
